True religion is a science based on the knowledge that human beings are created in the image of God. So the foundation of religion is inscribed in the human being himself.

By creating us in his own image, as it is written in Genesis, God inscribed us with his seal. And no matter what we do, we cannot escape it, because it forms part of our basic structure, the essence of our being. In this sense, human beings will never be absolutely free; they cannot escape this imprint, this schema from which their entire being is constructed. On the other hand, they have complete freedom to manifest the divine predestination they bear within them. This is why there are so many religions which, depending on where and when they came into being, have taken on such a rich diversity of forms.
